Foreign service is an underrated job

As a retired member of the U.S. Foreign Service, I was proud to represent America in Canada, Italy, (then) West Germany, (then) communist Hungary and Turkey over my over 24 years of service. Many Americans don’t know much about the Foreign Service, America’s diplomatic service. That is unfortunate since diplomacy is actually America’s real first line of defense, in the sense that if diplomats succeed in negotiating out major issues between the U.S. and others, everybody wins, and in extreme cases we don’t have to send the much more expensive military in.
