Basketball league forming in Aurora

A summer/fall basketball league presented through the Indiana Sports Group 812 will have open registrations until July 6 at the Aurora Recreation Community Center. Games will be played on Thursday and Friday evenings and some Saturday mornings July 17 through Sept.

Parks planning 5-year plan

The Rising Sun-Ohio County Park Board held a public information meeting June 22, at the Rising Sun-Ohio County Community Center for a five-year Parks Master Plan. Comments on the agenda included ideas regarding the Rising Sun-Ohio County park system and the most critical issue facing the park system.

School board names new high school assistant principal

The Rising Sun High School has a new assistant principal. Jason Barth has resigned as the girls JV basketball coach and will be promoted to the assistant principal/athletic director beginning Jan. 1. The move was announced at the Rising Sun-Ohio County Community School Corporation school board meeting on June 24.

Fair royalty

The royalty of the Ohio County Fair were named in May and reigned throughout this week at the fairgrounds. After interviews all of the candidates where they answered questions about their 4-H experience, Alayna Walcott, daughter of Jason and Dawn Walcott, was selected queen, while Olivia Cate, daughter of Steven and Kristie Cate, and Jacob Yauch, son of Dan and Jill Yauch, were selected princess and prince.

Help needed for fire victim

An early morning fire on Wednesday, June 23, destroyed the interior of an apartment owned by Monte and Darlene Denbo at The Courtyard, 107 Fourth St. A renter, Bill Smith, 60, who is blind, was home at the time was asleep and was awakened by choking from the smoke.

Paula Jean Smith, 59, of Rising Sun, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at her home surrounded with love. Paula was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 7, 1961, a daughter of the late Lorene (Hacker) Greer and Gene Greer. Paula was a graduate of Norwood High School, Class of 1979. She was the wife of James Smith. Paula and James were married on July 27, 2005. Paula worked as a bartender at Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, for 19 years. She was a loving mother and amazing memaw. Paula loved spending time with her grandchildren and making up songs for the kids. Paula also enjoyed her TV time and watching movies.

Chicken sandwiches all around

The Chick-fil-A Louisville Food Truck visited the Rising Sun Visitors Center on North High Street June 22 serving its famous chicken sandwiches and nuggets. Although it was the first time the company had set up in a place as small as Rising Sun, Kendal Miller, executive director for Ohio County Tourism, said, “I think they will determine after today whether or not we’ll be a regular stop on their food truck route just as Auntie Anne’s Pretzel did.” Hungry citizens waited their turn in line patiently instead of cooking their lunch and dinner meals..
