There was only one true race on the county level and that was for council-at-large, where four candidates vied for the three open seats.
With nearly 80% of voters casting a straight-ticket republican ballot, it is no surprise that the three republican candidates prevailed, but it was a close race.
Democrat incumbent Mark Guard was within 2% of reclaiming his seat. However, incumbent Tammy Elbright, Yvonne Walton, and Charles “Chaz” Cleary Jr. will be sworn in as the county’s newest council members in January 2021.
Walton thanked all of the voters for their support saying, “I am honored and humbled and will do my very best to work for Ohio County’s best interests. I promise to work for all residents.”
Elbright promised to serve all residents as well. “I would like to thank all that supported and had the confidence to elect me once again to the Ohio County Council. I will serve all residents of Ohio County to the best of my ability.” She then encouraged anyone who has questions or concerns to contact her.
Cleary was not available for comment on his election win.
In a Facebook post, Guard congratulated those he ran against, and thank those who voted for him.
“I want to thank everyone for the kind words and your help during this election, which was quite different! I know I’ve made my mistakes in my life and I truly apologize for them. Everyone stay safe,” Guard wrote.
