Hughlette “Hughie” O. (Carey) Rowland, 100, of Dillsboro passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023 at The Waters of Dillsboro.

Hughie was born on Sunday, Oct. 29, 1922, in Kidds Store, Kentucky; daughter of Arthur and Virginia (Grubbs) Carey. Hughie married the love of her life, Kenneth Rowland, on Dec. 4, 1943, and he preceded her in death on April 16, 1995.

Hughie worked as a bank teller at First National Bank in Aurora and at Flagship National Bank in Florida. Hughie was a member of the Life Church of Aurora where she was a very active member. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, and writing poetry. Hughie also loved fishing when she lived in Florida. Hughie most of all cherished spending time with her family. 

Hughie will be missed by her sons Donald (Kathi) Rowland of Dillsboro and Kenneth (Susan) Rowland of Mineola, Texas; daughter Vicki Keith of Wetumpka, Alabama; brother Buford Carey of Connersville; five grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.  

Hughie was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Virginia Carey; husband Kenneth Rowland; and several siblings. 

Family and friends may gather in remembering Hughie from 10 a.m.-noon, Friday, June 30, 2023, at Life Church in Aurora; 201 W Conwell St., Aurora, Indiana, 47001. A service will immediately follow at noon with Pastor Kenneth Hopper officiating. Burial will take place in Greendale Cemetery. Memorials may be given in honor of Hughie to Life Church.
