Henry Wilford Couch, a steadfast pillar of the Aurora community and a beloved family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on November 3, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of strength, humor, and generosity.
Born on April 12, 1942, in log cabin in Bullskin, KY, Henry was a true son of the American heartland who carried the spirit of his roots throughout his life. He settled in Aurora, IN, where he enjoyed a full and vibrant life surrounded by friends, family, and the natural splendor he so cherished.
A machinist by trade, Henry retired from Cincinnati Incorporated in 2002 after 30 years of dedicated service. His craftsmanship extended beyond his profession into his life-long vocation as a renowned gunsmith—a craft he approached with the precision and care that were the hallmarks of all his endeavors.
Henry’s love for the outdoors was a defining characteristic. An avid hunter and true outdoorsman, he found peace and pleasure in the forests and fields, passing on his knowledge and respect for nature to his children, grandchildren, and many friends.
Proudly serving his country in the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper, Henry spent time stationed in South Korea, a period of his life that shaped him and instilled values of courage and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
His life was a testament to the things he valued most: strength, generosity, humor, and a touch of stubbornness that those who knew him couldn’t help but admire. Henry’s storytelling, often punctuated with one of his many colorful favorite sayings, will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Karen, and his children: Billy (Christina) Craig of Lawrenceburg, IN, Vicky (Gary) Lobenstein of West Harrison, IN, Tracey (Denver) Bustle of Murray, KY, Troey Couch of Murray, KY, Chris (Regina) Couch of Fulton KY, and Sean (Theresa) Couch of Okemos, MI; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his indomitable spirit.
An open-house Celebration of Life will be held on November 11, 2023, at the Aurora Civic Center (City Park Circle, Aurora, IN 47001) from 1 pm to 5 pm, where friends, family, and community members are welcome to share stories, laughter, and memories of a man whose life was as rich and fulfilling as the woods he roamed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion (mylegion.org), an organization close to Henry’s heart that embodies his passion for service and honor.
Henry Wilford Couch’s memory will live on, not only in the echoes of the woods he loved but in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. May his journey be blessed with clear skies and calm waters.
