Youth basketball league brings rec sport to region

AURORA – When art teacher Lori Friedhoff’s son, Jared, came home from his first day assistant coaching South Dearborn’s junior varsity basketball team, he told her a story that pulled at her heart strings.“I guess they didn’t have enough players, but (the boys) were told to the face, ‘Yeah, you’re probably not going to see any playing time.’ My son said the look on the kids’ faces was something he’ll never forget … he was really bummed out,” she said.Friedhoff intended to find a recreational basketball league for the children that they could play in outside of school, but was shocked when none seemed to turn up.“I Google searched and looked and I could not find anything or anywhere that kids could get into a league that wasn’t through a school program,” she said.

Five named ‘Heroes of Character’ in southeast Indiana

The Character Council of Greater Cincinnati has named five Southeast Indiana residents as Heroes of Character in honor of the difference they’ve made in their communities.The “Be the Change” ceremony, which intends to “recognize individuals of all ages within the Tri-state area whose peers nominated as upstanding citizens and people of character who make a difference in the world,” will be on April 11 in Sharonville.The Character Council considers individuals throughout Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana when selecting its honorees.Abby Fox, Logan Lawrence, Art Reckman and Rachel Reynolds were selected as adult recipients, and fifth-grader Brylee Haring was selected as the student recipient.“This year, the (winners) have been tireless volunteers, or found a need for something and were problem solvers so they found something needed to be done and took care of it,” said Susan Mitchell, Heroes Celebration co-chair.
