Aurora’s God and Country Independence Day event at Gabbard Riverfront Park featured numerous vendor and informational booths, craft making (drums and flutes) for children, a Revolutionary War-era character re-enactment and finally a concert before the 10 p.m. fuse was lit for the annual firework display. Aurora Mayor Mark Drury and wife Margaret speak before the town’s annual firework display. The Ohio County Historical Museum is sponsoring a Union Monument Clean Up Day in Union Cemetery behind Rising Sun High School at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 17. The project will end when monument is spruced up and completed.

A demolition crew began tearing down Harrison Elementary on June 28. Southwest Local Schools will cut the ribbon on the new Harrison Elementary on Sunday, Aug. 1. The district will open four new buildings this year including two on the central campus behind the high school. The new Harrison and Crosby elementary buildings are on the same sites, behind the old buildings. The ribbon cutting ceremonies for the other three buildings will take place on Aug. 1 as well. A Switzerland County man agreed on June 15 to plea guilty in Dearborn County Circuit Court to voluntary manslaughter of a 19-year-old Aurora man in May 2020. Robert Marksberry was accused of shooting Nicholas Woodruff following an argument at Woodruff’s home the night of May 28, 2020, according to Dearborn County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens.
One day last week was all about fun and friends at the Munch-A-Lunch program at Dillsboro Community Park. The “summer ministry of food for the body and spirit” is sponsored by CARE Team of Dillsboro. Volunteers from local churches prepare warm meals for school age children and youth on Monday-Friday through the summer (June-July).
